Excerpt
Royal-Society having been firÐâ¦ÐÑt conceiv'd and delineated by a Great and Learned Chancellor, which High Office your LordÐâ¦ÐÑhip deservedly bears; not as an AcquiÐâ¦ÐÑition of Fortune, but your Intellectual Endowments; [pg] ConÐâ¦ÐÑpicuous (among other Excellencies) by the Inclination Your LordÐâ¦ÐÑhip diÐâ¦ÐÑcovers to promote Natural Knowledge: As it juÐâ¦ÐÑtifies the DiÐâ¦ÐÑcernment of that AÐâ¦ÐÑÐâ¦ÐÑembly, to pitch upon Your LordÐâ¦ÐÑhip for their PreÐâ¦ÐÑident, Ðâ¦ÐÑo does it no leÐâ¦ÐÑs diÐâ¦ÐÑcover the Candor, yea, I preÐâ¦ÐÑume to Ðâ¦ÐÑay, the Sublimity of your Mind, in Ðâ¦ÐÑo generouÐâ¦ÐÑly honoring them with your Acceptance of the Choice they have made.
A Chancellor, and a very Learned Lord, was the FirÐâ¦ÐÑt who honoured the Chair; and a no leÐâ¦ÐÑs Honorable and Learned Chancellor, reÐâ¦ÐÑigns it to Your LordÐâ¦ÐÑhip: So as after all the Difficulties and HardÐâ¦ÐÑhips the Society [pg] has hitherto gone through; it has thro' the Favour and Protection of its PreÐâ¦ÐÑidents, not only preÐâ¦ÐÑerv'd its Reputation from the Malevolence of Enemies and Detracters, but gone on Culminating, and now Triumphantly in Your LordÐâ¦ÐÑhip: Under whoÐâ¦ÐÑe propitious Influence, I am perÐâ¦ÐÑwaded, it may promiÐâ¦ÐÑe it Ðâ¦ÐÑelf That, which indeed has hitherto been wanting, to juÐâ¦ÐÑtifie the Glorious Title it bears of a ROYAL SOCIETY. The Emancipating it from Ðâ¦ÐÑome Remaining and DiÐâ¦ÐÑcouraging CircumÐâ¦ÐÑtances, which it as yet labours under; among which, that of a Precarious and unÐâ¦ÐÑteady Abode, is not the leaÐâ¦ÐÑt.
This Honor was reÐâ¦ÐÑerv'd for Your LordÐâ¦ÐÑhip; and an Honor, permit me [pg] to call it, not at all unworthy the Owning of the GreateÐâ¦ÐÑt Person living: Namely, the EÐâ¦ÐÑtabliÐâ¦ÐÑhing and Promoting Real Knowledge; and (next to what is Divine) truly Ðâ¦ÐÑo called; as far, at leaÐâ¦ÐÑt, as Humane Nature extends towards the Knowledge of Nature, by enlarging her Empire beyond the Land of Spectres, Forms, Intentional Species, Vacuum, Occult Qualities, and other Inadequate Notions; which, by their ObÐâ¦ÐÑtreperous and NoiÐâ¦ÐÑy DiÐâ¦ÐÑputes, affrighting, and (till of late) deterring Men from adventuring on further DiÐâ¦ÐÑcoveries, confin'd them in a lazy AcquieÐâ¦ÐÑcence, and to be fed with FantaÐâ¦ÐÑms and fruitleÐâ¦ÐÑs Speculations, which Ðâ¦ÐÑignifie nothing to the Ðâ¦ÐÑpecifick Nature of Things, [pg] solid and uÐâ¦ÐÑeful knowledge; by the InveÐâ¦ÐÑtigation of CauÐâ¦ÐÑes, Principles, Energies, Powers, and Effects of Bodies, and Things ViÐâ¦ÐÑible; and to improve them for the Good and Benefit of Mankind.
My Lord, That which the Royal Society needs to accompliÐâ¦ÐÑh an entire Freedom, and (by rendring their CircumÐâ¦ÐÑtances more eaÐâ¦ÐÑie) capable to Ðâ¦ÐÑubÐâ¦ÐÑiÐâ¦ÐÑt with Honor, and to reach indeed the Glorious Ends of its InÐâ¦ÐÑtitution, is an EÐâ¦ÐÑtabliÐâ¦ÐÑhment in a more Settl'd, Appropriate, and Commodious Place; having hitherto (like the Tabernacle in the WilderneÐâ¦ÐÑs) been only Ambulatory for almoÐâ¦ÐÑt Forty Years: But Solomon built the FirÐâ¦ÐÑt Temple; and what forbids us to hope, [pg] that as Great a Prince may build Solomon's HouÐâ¦ÐÑe, as that Great Chancellor (one of Your LordÐâ¦ÐÑhip's Learned PredeceÐâ¦ÐÑÐâ¦ÐÑors) had deÐâ¦ÐÑign'd the Plan; there being nothing in that AuguÐâ¦ÐÑt and Noble Model impoÐâ¦ÐÑÐâ¦ÐÑible, or beyond the Power of Nature and Learned InduÐâ¦ÐÑtry....
