William Montgomery Brown
William Montgomery Brown (1855–1937) was a controversial American bishop and writer known for his outspoken socialist views. He was initially a bishop in the Episcopal Church but became a key figure in the Old Catholic Church after being excommunicated for his radical ideas. His most famous work, "Communism and Christianism" (1920), argued that Christianity should adopt Marxist principles to address societal inequities. Brown's writings, including "The Bankruptcy of Christian Supernaturalism" (1923), reflected his belief in combining Christian faith with socialist ideology, making him a unique figure in both religious and political circles.
