Ulrich Bonnell Phillips was an American historian known for his studies of the American South and slavery. He is best known for his works "American Negro Slavery" (1918) and "Life and Labor in the Old South" (1929), where he argued that slavery was a paternalistic institution that benefited both slaves and slaveholders. Phillips was a pioneering scholar in Southern history, but his work has been criticized for its pro-Southern bias and racist interpretations. Despite these controversies, his detailed research on plantation records set a foundation for future scholarship on the history of the American South.
