Marietta Holley
Marietta Holley (1836-1926) was an American humorist and writer who gained fame for her satirical novels that addressed social issues and women's rights. Writing under the pseudonym "Josiah Allen's Wife," she created the character Samantha Allen, whose sharp wit and plain-spoken commentary critiqued gender inequality and political corruption. Holley's work, often compared to that of Mark Twain, was highly popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, making her a significant voice in American literature and the women's suffrage movement.
