M. P. (Matthew Phipps) Shiel
Matthew Phipps Shiel (1865–1947) was a British writer known for his imaginative and often dystopian science fiction and supernatural fiction. His most famous work is the novel "The Purple Cloud" (1901), which depicts the last man on Earth after a global catastrophe. Shiel was a key figure in the development of early weird fiction, and his works often explored themes of isolation, madness, and cosmic terror. In addition to "The Purple Cloud," his literary output includes "The Lord of the Sea" (1901) and the Prince Zaleski detective stories, blending mystery with philosophical reflection.
