Lawrence, of the Resurrection, Brother
Brother Lawrence (1614–1691) was a French Carmelite monk known for his teachings on practicing the presence of God. He spent much of his life working in the monastery kitchen and believed that one could find a deep connection with God in even the simplest tasks of daily life. His thoughts were compiled posthumously in the book "The Practice of the Presence of God," which emphasizes living in constant communion with God through mindfulness and prayer. Brother Lawrence's insights have had a lasting impact on Christian spirituality, particularly in the contemplative tradition.

Brother Lawrence was born Nicholas Herman around 1610 in Herimenil, Lorraine, a Duchy of France. His birth records were destroyed in a fire at his parish church during the Thirty Years War, a war in which he fought as a young soldier.
