Robert Fitzgerald
Robert Fitzgerald (1910-1985) was an American poet, translator, and literary critic best known for his English translations of classical Greek and Latin works. He translated major epics such as "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" by Homer, and "The Aeneid" by Virgil, earning acclaim for their clarity and poetic quality. Fitzgerald's translations are notable for their accessibility while retaining the grandeur of the original texts, making them standard works in many academic settings. He also wrote original poetry and served as a professor of English at Harvard University, contributing significantly to the study of classical literature in the 20th century.
