She is best remembered for her detective novel "The Dead Letter" (1866), which is considered one of the first full-length detective novels written by an American. Her novel "Maum Guinea, and Her Plantation 'Children'" (1861) was also significant, as it addressed issues of slavery and abolition during the Civil War.
