Marc Monnier (1827–1885) was a Swiss writer, translator, and professor of French literature renowned for his historical and literary studies. Born in Florence, Italy, he grew up in a multicultural environment that deeply influenced his works. Monnier is best known for his in-depth studies of Neapolitan society, particularly in "The Brigands of Southern Italy," which provides a vivid portrayal of Italian banditry and social unrest during the 19th century. He also authored "Pompeii and the Roman Campania," a detailed exploration of ancient Pompeii and its surrounding areas, combining archaeology and engaging storytelling.
