Manly Wade Wellman (1903–1986) was an American writer known for his works of speculative fiction, particularly in the genres of fantasy, horror, and science fiction. His most famous creation is the character John the Balladeer (also known as Silver John), featured in stories blending Appalachian folklore with supernatural elements, such as those in the collection "Who Fears the Devil?" Wellman also wrote historical fiction, comic books, and non-fiction works, earning recognition for his diverse contributions to literature. Over his career, he won several awards, including the Edgar Allan Poe Award for his horror writing.
