Lothrop Stoddard
Lothrop Stoddard was an American historian, journalist, and eugenicist known for his controversial views on race and civilization. Born in 1883, Stoddard gained notoriety for his 1920 book "The Rising Tide of Color Against White World-Supremacy," where he expressed fears about the demographic changes and racial integration he saw as threatening Western dominance. He advocated for policies of segregation and exclusion, influenced by his belief in eugenics, a pseudoscience aimed at "improving" human populations. Though his ideas were widely read in his time, they have since been discredited and are criticized for their racist underpinnings.
