James Buchanan
James Buchanan, the 15th president of the United States (1857–1861), was the only president to remain a lifelong bachelor. Born in Pennsylvania in 1791, Buchanan had a long political career, serving as a congressman, senator, and secretary of state before his presidency. His time in office was marked by growing sectional tensions over slavery, and his inability to address these divisions is often seen as a factor leading to the Civil War.
