Izaak Walton
Izaak Walton (1593–1683) was an English writer best known for his classic work "The Compleat Angler," first published in 1653, which celebrates the art of fishing and the natural world. A keen fisherman himself, Walton combined practical angling advice with philosophical reflections, making the book a blend of manual and pastoral literature. He also wrote biographies of notable figures such as John Donne and George Herbert, showcasing his skill as a biographer. Walton's works reflect a deep love for nature and a quiet, contemplative approach to life.

The present writer possesses a copy of one of Walton’s Lives, that of Bishop Sanderson, with the author’s...

I told this, which is to be read in the sixth chapter of the book of Dubravius, unto a friend, who replied, " It was as improbable as to have the mouse scratch out the cat's eyes". But he did not consider, that there be Fishing frogs, which the Dalmatians call the Water-devil, of which I might tell you as wonderful a story: but I shall tell you that 'tis not to be doubted but that...

INTRODUCTION [Sidenote: Introduction] I have been persuaded, by a friend whom I reverence, and ought to obey, to write the Life of RICHARD HOOKER, the happy Author of Five—if not more—of the eight learned books of "The Laws of Ecclesiastical Polity." And though I have undertaken it, yet it hath been with some unwillingness: because I foresee that it must prove to me, and especially at this...
