Calvin Thomas
Calvin Thomas (1854–1919) was a prominent American scholar who made significant contributions to the study of Germanic languages and literature, serving as a professor at both the University of Michigan and Columbia University. After earning his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Michigan in 1874, he taught Latin and Greek before pursuing philology at the University of Leipzig, Germany. He played a key role in introducing German studies into American public schools and held leadership positions in organizations like the Modern Language Association of America and the American Dialect Society. Thomas published several important works, including "A Practical German Grammar" and "A History of German Literature", and was active in the simplified spelling movement during his academic career.
