On Saturday, May 1st, the Tennessee Centennial Exposition was formally opened. The object of this Exposition is to celebrate the anniversary of the admission of the State of Tennessee into the Union, one hundred years ago. Tennessee is the first State thus to celebrate its centennial. The ceremonies at the opening of the Exposition were very simple; they had, however, one interesting feature. After the Governor of the State and other... more...

The Grant parade is over, the monument given to and accepted by the City of New York, and the great day has come and gone as such days will, leaving behind it tired eyes and a confused memory of marching soldiers. The sections of the parade in which The Great Round World took most interest were those in which the boys paraded, and especially the division in which the cadets and boys from the military schools marched. This division was greeted... more...

Now that the war between Greece and Turkey has really commenced, people are much interested in comparing the strength of the two armies, and wondering which side will gain the victory. The Greek regular army numbers one hundred and twenty-five thousand, the Turkish one hundred and fifty thousand. When all the reserves are called out, it is thought that both countries can put twice if not three times as many men in the field. The Turkish army is... more...

The troubles between Greece and Turkey are still unsettled, and though the war clouds look lower and more threatening, the storm has not as yet broken. Several matters have, however, been made clearer to us. The first and most important is that there is no such thing as a Concert of the Powers. It has been hinted for some time past that the Powers were not agreed as to the course they should take with Greece, but it is now openly known that... more...

The news from Cuba this week confirms the story of the capture of Gen. Ruis Rivera. It seems that the Spanish General, Velazco, was told by some of his scouts that Rivera was encamped in the near neighborhood, and only had a force of one hundred men with him. Acting on this information, the Spaniards surrounded the camp and attacked the Cubans, who fought bravely until they were finally overpowered. General Rivera was severely wounded, and was... more...

The President has sent his first message to Congress. There is startling news from Crete. Greece has openly defied the warning of the Powers, and has declared her intention of assisting the little island, and freeing her from the Turkish rule. All Europe is ringing with the spirited reply sent by Greece to the demand that she should submit to the wishes of Europe, and give up her warlike intentions toward Turkey. This reply was short and to the point. It was simply this: "Greece accepts full... more...

The news from Cuba is not very encouraging. The reforms promised by Spain are not believed in by the Cubans, and the fighting is going on as fiercely as ever. General Gomez, who is the head of the insurgent army, declares that Cuba will never accept anything from Spain but absolute freedom. When he took command of the Cuban army, Gomez made this a condition of his acceptance. He did this because, years ago, when Cuba was fighting Spain, the... more...
